Did You Know You Can Now Set Custom Messages That Display When a Part Limit Is Reached?

When a part limit stops a user from ordering, the standard system message tells them they’ve hit a limit — but it doesn’t tell them why that limit exists or what they should do next. The new Override Message feature lets you set a custom message for any part limit, so when users hit that limit, they see targeted, actionable guidance instead of a generic alert. This gives your clients the ability to communicate policy context and next steps directly in the moment users need it most.

Benefits

  • Replace generic limit alerts with meaningful guidance — instead of a system message, users see a message tailored to the specific limit they’ve triggered, explaining exactly what the restriction means and what to do.
  • Reduce user confusion and support requests — when users understand why a limit exists and how to adjust their order, they’re less likely to reach out for help or submit orders that will be rejected.
  • Support for rich text — Override Messages support HTML, giving you the ability to format messages with bold text, line breaks, or links for even clearer communication.
  • Smart deduplication — if a cart or kit build triggers multiple limits that share the same Override Message, the message is displayed only once, keeping the experience clean.

How It Works

Override Messages are configured wherever part limits are managed in the back end.

Adding or Editing an Override Message on a Part Limit

  1. Navigate to the part limit you want to update. Part limits can be accessed from:
    • User Group’s settings page
    • An individual User’s settings page
    • Part’s details page
  2. Locate the part limit you want to customize and open it for editing.
  3. Find the new Override Message field.
  4. Enter the custom message you want users to see when this limit is triggered. Plain text and HTML are both supported (up to 500 characters).
  5. Save your changes.

Once saved, whenever a front end user attempts to order more than this limit allows — whether in their cart or while building a kit — the Override Message will appear in place of the standard limit alert.

Key Points

  • If no Override Message is set on a part limit, the standard system message will continue to display as before — this feature is purely opt-in per limit.
  • Override Messages support HTML formatting, so you can use tags to bold key information, add line breaks, or include links if needed.
  • If a user’s cart or kit triggers multiple part limits simultaneously and two or more of those limits share the exact same Override Message, the message will only be shown once. Distinct override messages will each display separately.
  • Override Messages are configured per part limit, meaning a single part can have different messages for different user groups or users depending on how their limits are set up.

If your portals use part limits to manage ordering behavior — especially for complex product types like kits or enrollment materials — Override Messages give you a powerful way to make those restrictions feel intentional and helpful rather than opaque. Try adding a message to one of your most commonly triggered limits and see how it changes the user experience.
